Professor Ameh holds an MBBS (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria) and fellowship credentials of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS). He has pursued paediatric surgical fellowships and advanced training at institutions including St James’s University Hospital (Leeds, UK), Great Ormond Street Hospital (London, UK) and other international centres.

His clinical practice encompasses specialised paediatric surgery with significant experience in paediatric urology, neonatal surgery and complex congenital surgical conditions. For example, his leadership role in the separation of conjoined twins in Abuja is documented.

In global health and academic leadership, Professor Ameh has been a driving force for children’s surgery across sub-Saharan Africa: He led the development of Nigeria’s National Surgical, Obstetric, Anaesthesia and Nursing Plan (NSOANP), the first such national surgical plan to include and prioritise children’s surgical care. He serves in key roles with major surgical and paediatric surgery professional organisations, including the Pan‑African Paediatric Surgical Association (PAPSA), the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON), and the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS).

His research interests emphasise children’s surgical care access in low-resource settings, surgical education and training, and global surgery. He has reportedly authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and edited multiple books on paediatric surgery.

Professor Ameh is widely recognised as a leader in paediatric surgery in Africa, known for his combination of high-quality surgical care, advocacy for global surgery, and mentorship of the next generation of surgeons. He remains actively engaged in improving surgical systems for children and promoting health-equity in surgical access.
