Dr. Joël Vivien Dakomene

Dr. Joël Vivien Dakomene is a Cameroonian paediatric surgeon in training, currently in the fifth year of his specialisation (DES) in paediatric surgery at Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where he is attached to CHU Pédiatrique Charles de Gaulle. He is completing a one-year clinical fellowship (DFMS) in paediatric surgery at CHI de Créteil, Paris, France. He earned his medical degree in 2018 from the Higher Institute of Health Sciences of Bangangté, Cameroon.


His areas of focus include paediatric trauma and orthopaedics, minimally invasive surgery, and surgical education in francophone Africa. He is the principal investigator of a paediatric surgical tele-mentoring network in Burkina Faso, which aims to connect CHU Charles de Gaulle with regional hospitals in Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouahigouya. His clinical research includes work on Hirschsprung disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis.


Dr Dakomene is an active member of the Junior Team of the Pan-African Paediatric Surgical Association (PAPSA) and an affiliate of The Operating Room Global (TORG), two networks committed to advancing surgical care and education for children across Africa and beyond. He also holds University of Washington certificates in Project Management and in Monitoring and Evaluation in Global Health. Through the Policy to Practice Fellowship, he aims to translate surgical policy into sustainable improvements in access to safe paediatric surgery in Burkina Faso and across francophone Africa.

PASHeF aims to improve surgical healthcare in Africa by bringing together policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and advocates to address issues such as political commitment, health service delivery, and national policies.
