Dr. Ammanuel Adane Bitew

Dr. Amanuel Adane is a physician with over eight years of experience in clinical practice, healthcare leadership, and quality improvement. He holds a medical degree from Addis Ababa University and a Master’s in Global Health Delivery (Global Surgery) from the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda.

Dr. Amanuel began his career at Mekane Selam Primary Hospital, where he led the Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement Unit, and later advanced to emergency care and clinical education at Debre Berhan Referral Hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Deputy Director of St. Peter’s Field Hospital, coordinating care for more than 2,000 patients and training over 200 providers in critical care and infection prevention. He currently serves as Quality Assurance and Innovation Lead in the surgical department at St. Peter’s General Hospital and supports the Ministry of Health in revising Ethiopia’s National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan.

His research interests focus on surgical systems strengthening, quality improvement, and antimicrobial resistance. He has published in peer-reviewed journals on antimicrobial resistance, surgical efficiency, and global surgery education. In addition, he has served as an abstract reviewer for international conferences such as the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and the Pan-African Surgical Healthcare Forum (PASHeF), and as a peer reviewer for journals including BMJ Global Health.

Beyond research, Dr. Amanuel has played active leadership roles nationally and internationally. He co-organized the Pan-African Surgical Healthcare Forum and serves on the organizing committee for its upcoming meeting in Ethiopia. He collaborated with UGHE on the MedEd Africa Conference, contributed to national perioperative quality improvement networks, and mentors and lectures for institutions such as Duke University. He has also pursued certifications in project management and healthcare leadership.

Passionate about expanding equitable access to safe and high-quality care, Dr. Amanuel leverages his clinical expertise, leadership experience, and research background to drive meaningful improvements in surgical and health systems.

PASHeF aims to improve surgical healthcare in Africa by bringing together policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and advocates to address issues such as political commitment, health service delivery, and national policies.
